Can you teach a cat to do tricks?

There are a lot of misconceptions about cats, but in actuality cats are as intelligent as dogs and perhaps even more so. However, they have a more independent nature that most cat owners readily recognize, relate to, and love. That said, with the right technique, you can teach your cat to sit, walk on a leash, etc. However, don't expect to train a cat like you would a dog. Speaking from personal experience, I've trained my two kittens to sit up on their hind legs for their food. I did this by letting them first smell the plate of food. Then I raised the plate above their heads and asked them to "sit up." After only a couple of tries, they sat up. After this, I rewarded them with the plate of food. Believe me, it's not as difficult as you may think to train a cat. Always go with positive reinforcement.
