The roots are long, so as to absorb moisture from low down in the sand - sand has rapid drainage causing water to leak to the bottom.

Marram grass lives in hot, salty climates. It is incredibly robust and yet, the harsh conditions it lives in actually make it grow more. If even two inches of the roots were snipped off, the root would grow where it was landed and therefore Marram grass spreads fast.
