Why does it hurt when you bite your pinky and then interlock them?

There is an old joke doctors tell. It goes like this: A patient complains to a doctor, "When I do this, it hurts." And the doctor replies, "Well, then don't do that." Biting your pinky finger temporarily activates sensory nerves. It can take a little while for the brain to stop registering the pain sensation.
