They have a muscular chest because they live a partial arboreal lifestyle. Such muscles aid in climbing trees. This muscle group also aides in quadrupedal locomotion on the ground. The chest muscles are used quite a bit in this position, as are the arms. Gorillas have an even more impressive chest due to their total terrestrial lifestyle.
