Why does your cat eat dirt on the ground?

I wouldn't know why an outdoor cat would lick dirt and rocks but if it's an indoor cat and they haven't been outside in awhile it's because it smells wild and like the outside world. Everytime I bring a flower inside my cat loves to smell it and sometimes even tries to eat it.
