Butterflies, like other insects, have a fluid called hemolymph instead of blood. Hemolymph is a colorless or pale yellow liquid that circulates through their open circulatory system, delivering nutrients and hormones and removing waste products. Unlike vertebrate blood, hemolymph does not contain red blood cells or hemoglobin, so it does not transport oxygen in the same way. Instead, insects respire through a network of tracheae that directly deliver oxygen to their tissues.
