Why do doctors wear scrubs?

Someone told me, once, that it was because they don't want to get germs, filth, etcetera, on their street clothes. That answer doesn't seem right.

I would imagine its because they want to be as sanitary as possible around sick people. Street clothes are not exactly sanitary. This leads me to wonder why medical professionals wear scrubs outside of medical facilities.
