St. René Goupil is known for being a French Jesuit missionary and martyr who dedicated his life to evangelizing Native Americans in North America during the 17th century. He was one of the first Jesuit missionaries to serve in New France (Canada) and was martyred in 1642 by the Iroquois while trying to spread Christianity. Goupil is particularly remembered for his compassion and commitment to the indigenous people, and he was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 1930. His feast day is celebrated on September 29.
