Who was given credit for discovering bacteria?

Around the late 1660s, Antony Van Leeuwenhoek looked under a microscope to observe the plaque from between his teeth. He noticed something unusual and recorded his observations. Plaque is in fact a form of bacteria; therefore, this is how bacteria was discovered.
