Trophoblast is the outer layer of cells that forms the placenta during early pregnancy. It plays a crucial role in implantation of the embryo into the uterine wall and in the exchange of nutrients and gases between the mother and the developing fetus. Trophoblast cells also produce hormones essential for maintaining pregnancy, such as human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This layer differentiates into various subtypes that contribute to placental structure and function.
