It depends on where you are! In Britain & Ireland, where the dog is originally from, it ranges from a light cream or champagne colour to to rich and lustrous gold. This is why it was named the Golden Retriever! However, when the dog was introduced to the US, show judges there changed their preference in colour to a darker shade, sometimes reaching a red/auburn as dark as the Irish/Red Setter. This often leads to confusion over the origin of the name in the US, as some people wonder why a red coloured dog is called golden.
