Why do people say how many r's in one direction?

In one of Harry's and Louis' old twitcams, they were prank calling people. One of the people they called asked Louis' name and he said terrance. and louis spelled the name and kept repeating the r's. then the guy asked how many r's and Louis said 6 r's.
