Why does your Craftsman 4.5 HP model 917.388040 lawn mower start when priming the bulb but then quits after 2-3 seconds The engine will stay running if continued bulb priming.?

The fuel filter is probably clogged. The primer bulb creates enough suction to feed fuel to the engine, but the vacuum created by the piston is not enough to keep the fuel going.
