What are rear spoilers in a car?

They are flaps on the back, mostly meant for race cars but people like the look of them on their cars. They are designed for high speeds. The air hits the spoiler and pushes down on it, pressing on the rear of the car. This prevents the back end from actually lifting up at high speeds.
