What type of oil does a 2004 Audi s4 take?

Your Audi requires an oil that meets VW502 spec.

Mobil one 0w40

Amsoil AFL 5w40

Castrol European Formula (not sure of the viscosity)

Look on the back of the container for the oils certifications. Make sure it states VW 502.
