The Chumash people traditionally spoke six distinct languages, which belong to the Hokan language family. These languages are Chumash, which can be further divided into several dialects: Barbareno, Obispeno, Ineseño, Samala, and Ventureno. Each dialect reflects the unique cultural and geographic nuances of the Chumash communities in Southern California. Today, efforts are being made to revitalize these languages among the Chumash descendants.
