The Egyptians destroyed the city of Carthage in 146 BCE during the Third Punic War. After a lengthy siege, the Romans captured and systematically razed the city, marking the end of the Punic Wars and leading to Roman dominance in the Mediterranean. The destruction of Carthage was so complete that it was said to have been "plowed under." Following its destruction, a new Roman city was eventually built on the site.
