Palm trees in San Diego primarily consist of species that were introduced from other regions, including Mexico and other parts of the world. While a few native species of palms exist in California, most of the iconic palms seen throughout San Diego, such as the Mexican fan palm, were brought in for ornamental purposes in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Thus, while they thrive in the area, they are not native to San Diego.
