How come if you get a tracheotomy do you have a hole in your throat?

1) A stent can be placed to cover the hole and begin the healing process. However if the patient is on a ventilator, the healing will be interrupted due to the air pressure.

2) If the hole does not show signs of healing, the trachea has to be reconstructed - plastic surgery.

My mom is in this position and we are praying that the hole heals without surgery.
