There is CURRENTLY nothing to determine if wearing an earing in one ear or the other shows homosexuality or whether or not you are single.
However, in the mid 80's, the left ear meant you were not gay. The right ear was a sign that you were. That has since changed thanks to piercing in tattoo parlors everywhere. You now see both ears or one pierced and many piercings in the ears at once. It no longer means anything specific.
The confusion on being single or taken is actually a reference from which side a lady placed a flower over her ear. Some cultures still use this act and in the 50 age range and up you will see this done. It rolled over to earings for men in the 80's and some referred to whether they were single.
Hope this not only answers your question but gives a history into it if you hear someone say it.
