The blood vessels with muscular walls that help to massage blood along their lengths are primarily the arteries and veins. Arteries have thick, muscular walls that enable them to withstand and regulate high blood pressure as they transport oxygenated blood away from the heart. Veins also contain muscular walls, albeit thinner than those of arteries, and they utilize the contraction of surrounding skeletal muscles, along with valves, to assist in the return of deoxygenated blood back to the heart.
