Why are most werewolves drawn without tails?

As werewolves are fictional beings, it is not possible to refer to the skeleton of one to be certain what they look like in human form.

As we are talking about speculative anatomy, the human tail bone has as many bones in it (just very small) as a wolf's tail has in it, so perhaps during the transformation from animal to human the tail becomes more "human' like.

On the other hand I know several artists who draw their "vision" of the fictional beings as having a tail in human form.
