Clemson, South Carolina, is named after Thomas Green Clemson, a prominent politician and agriculturalist. In the mid-19th century, Clemson inherited a large estate, where he later established a land grant college dedicated to agriculture and the mechanical arts. After his death in 1888, his estate was transformed into what is now Clemson University, and the surrounding area adopted his name. The town of Clemson officially incorporated in 1946.
