its natural sugar. not the stuff you by in the grocery store.

second answer:

Sugar is an important macronutrient used to produce energy in your body via the citric acid cycle. Despite some crash diet ideology, sugars and fats are good for you and you should consume them relative to your specific need. Consuming more than you need usually causes you to store it as fat.

more in depth:

I have wondered the same thing. Fruits contain the monosaccaride fructose which is a simple sugar. I've always heard to stay away from simple sugars because they spike your blood sugar due to the fact that they are absorbed so quickly (unlike a disaccaride which has to be broken down to monosaccarides to be used for energy). I've come to the conclusion that fruits are good for you because they contain a lot of fiber (polysaccarides including some that are indigestable). This fiber slows the digestion of the simple sugars you just consumed from the fruit making it like consuming a disaccaride. Again, this is me putting 2 pieces of knowledge together. I didnt read this from a text book or hear it from a licensed nutritionist.
