Fernando Gorges was a key figure in the establishment of the Province of Maine, which he aimed to develop as a colony in the early 17th century. He was granted a charter for the region in 1622 and sought to promote settlement and trade there. However, Maine ultimately remained a part of Massachusetts for much of its early history, and Gorges' vision for an independent colony did not fully materialize.
