No.

Facebook was started as a forum for university students over the age of 18 to connect, keep in touch and share news and photos. Children simply do not have any place on it.

It is damaging for children to have access to the 'popularity contests' and fake veneer of other kids' lives that can be projected on to facebook, which makes them feel worthlss, encourages cliques, popularity and bullying and can have a devastating effect on less 'cool' kids.

Facebook is a huge forum for bullying and inappropriate contact of children - you can message someone on the site even if you are not their friend and recent statistics have shown that a scary number of children have been contacted in this way.

Children do not need facebook to keep in touch with old friends- they see them at school and that should be enough.

Furthermore in a recent survey 58% of teachers said that an obsession with facebook and other social networking sites was having a detrimental effect on children's homework, their handwriting and their spelling.
