Who took the throne after Charles 1?

After Charles I was executed in 1649, England was declared a republic, and Oliver Cromwell became the leader of the Commonwealth as Lord Protector. The monarchy was not restored until 1660, when Charles II, the son of Charles I, ascended to the throne following the period of republican rule.
