The life cycle of the grey squirrel begins with mating in late winter to early spring, leading to the female giving birth to a litter of 2 to 6 young after a gestation period of about 44 days. The young, born blind and hairless, are cared for in the nest for about eight weeks before they begin to venture out. By the end of the summer, they are fully weaned and can forage for themselves.
