Who invented The Hobbit?

He was grading papers one day and came to a blank sheet of paper in the stack.

He scribbled on the blank sheet the first line of The Hobbit: "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.", then continued grading.

A few days later he began expanding that line, adding material from various Anglo-Saxon legends (he taught Anglo-Saxon).
