What mouse operations would you use if you want to deselect an item on the screen?

To deselect an item on the screen, you can usually click on an empty area of the workspace or canvas, which removes the selection from the currently highlighted item. Alternatively, holding down the Ctrl key (or Command key on Mac) while clicking on the selected item can also deselect it. In some applications, right-clicking on the selected item and choosing a "Deselect" option may work as well.
