Why does my Transmission stay in drive and will not go into park nuteral or reverse but the shift cable is moving?

I don't know what vehicle you have, But our 2000 Ford exp. lost a screw out of the steering colum and wouldn't go into park. Once the screw was replaced no problem shifts fine.
