If a patient is given a check from the health insurance to pay a doctor but you keep the money what happens?

If you have a plan that pays you directly that is a contract between you and the insurance company. It in no way relieves you of the obligation to pay your provider. You are subject to all the same liabilities as anyone else you owe money to.
