Basketball was invented in December 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a physical education instructor in Springfield, Massachusetts. He developed the game as a way to keep his students active indoors during the winter months. Naismith formulated 13 basic rules and used a peach basket as the first hoop. The game quickly gained popularity and evolved into the sport we know today.
