Between 1750 and 1800, life expectancy varied significantly by region and social class but generally averaged around 30 to 40 years in many parts of Europe and the Americas. High infant mortality rates significantly lowered overall life expectancy, as many children did not survive past their early years. In urban areas, poor living conditions often contributed to shorter lifespans, while rural populations might have experienced slightly longer life expectancies. However, for those who reached adulthood, living into their 50s or 60s was not uncommon.
