What causes the check engine light on a 2001 Toyota Camry come on?

It is on because the ECU has detected a problem with the emissions system. Have the system scanned with an OBD2 scan tool to retrieve the code that has been set. This code will tell you what part of the system is being effected. Not necessarily the defective part but what part is being effected.
