An Anthology of Short stories: THE MARTYR'S CORNER. BY R.K. NARAYAN THIS ANSWER HAS BEEN WRITTEN BY: ARKODEEP SENGUPTA SCHOOL :ST.PATRICK'S H.S SCHOOL ASANSOLRAMA was a street vendor selling eatables on the roadside corner between market road and the lane leading to the chemist's shop. He arrived every night after 8 o' clock carrying all the equipments to set up his roadside counter and all the delicious eatables .One day Rama arrived at his usual time .He found that two groups of people were fighting over something since evening. Someone was stabbed when he was distributing notices about something. A young boy told Rama that it might be a private quarrel and nobody cared for such fights . Somebody in the crowd got annoyed by the remark and began to argue with him. Then somebody else from the crowd said that everyone had freedom to express his views.Somebody who stood near him slapped him for his remark. That led to a chain reaction and a riot followed .Soda water bottles were thrown. A group of persons demanded the shops to be closed.Shops that were not closed were looted. The place was soon cordoned off by police who took necessary steps to maintain Law and Order; protect the injured and to keep themselves intact. The public said that the casualties were 3000 but the government announced that 5 were injured and 4 and a quarter killed in a police firing. Rama had hid under a culvert.Normal life returned after ten days.Newspapers demanded enquiries about the incident. When Rama returned to the original spot to set up his shop, some young men stopped him. According to them that was the spot where their leader had died and the municipality had handed over the corner to them to set up a mamorial in the honour of their departed leader. They collected money and set up a stone memorial with an ornament Fencing around it. Rama had to set up his shop 200 yards away, which was far from the vision of the customers. His regular customers had left him. Rama's sale was considerably reduced. When his savings were reduced ,Rama sought employment at a Kohinoor restaurant for 20 rupees a month. His ego was hurt when some customers ordered him rudely. He told those customers that he was once a hotel owner himself .The memory of those days gave him great satisfaction.
