In 1792 a man from Newburyport Essex County, Massachusetts (a place in the north of the U.S.A.) called John Pearson made a pilot-like bread product from just flour and water that he called Pearson's Pilot Bread. It was an immediate success with sailors because of its shelf life and got known as hardtack or sea biscuit.
