Below are listed fresh fruits and vegetables that humans commonly eat but that are dangerous for rabbits. See the link below for a more complete list of plants that rabbits shouldn't eat.

There are many other plants not listed here (ones that humans don't commonly eat) that are poisonous for rabbits and should be avoided.

As a general rule, remove all seeds, stones/pits, twigs, and foliage before giving fruit/veg to a rabbit -- often, these things are dangerous for rabbits. (One exception: Apple seeds are poisonous, but the twigs and leaves are perfectly safe and a great treat for rabbits.) See the related link below for more details.

Avoid Entirely

  • Corn (fresh; see below for info about dried milled corn)
  • Mushrooms
  • Castor "beans" (seeds, actually)
  • Hedge Apples
  • Beans (exception: edible pod varieties; see below list for details)
  • Potato
  • Peas
  • Wild carrot
  • Wild cucumber
  • Wild lettuce - poisonous
  • Avocado - poisonous
  • Onions
  • Aloe vera
  • Sweet potato
  • Eggplant
  • Bamboo shoots
  • Tea leaves
  • Soy beans
  • Nuts
  • Seeds

Avoid or Proceed with Caution

  • Corn (dried and milled) - safe as a low ingredient in pellets, but high in sugars and carbs and should otherwise be avoided in a rabbit's diet; avoid fresh corn entirely
  • Beans (edible-pod varieties, like snow peas and green beans) - indicated in gas*
  • Crucifers: cauliflower, cabbage, cress, bok choy, broccoli, mustard, arugula/rocket, turnip greens, rapini/broccoli rate, collards, kale, brussels sprouts, etc. - high in goitrogens, should be limited; also indicated in gas*; white/light leaves should be avoided entirely (low in nutrients and indicated in diarrhea)
  • Rosemary - leaves of some varieties are poisonous
  • Sage - leaves of some varieties are poisonous
  • Lettuce - dark-coloured varieties are fine but white/light leaves are unhealthy and can lead to illness; lettuces also contain lactucarium, a dangerous substance, so many people recommend limiting all lettuces in the rabbit diet
  • Grains - safe as a low ingredient in pellets, but high in sugars and carbs and should otherwise be avoided in a rabbit's diet; one or two oat groats are safe as an occasional treat (that's the whole oat groat, not oatmeal or rolled oats; avoid processed grains entirely)
  • Fruit and veg high in sugar/carbs (like carrot) - occasional treats; the House Rabbit Society recommends no more than 2 tablespoons of treat food per day for a normal, healthy 6 pound rabbit

*A note on gas

Some rabbits are more sensitive to gas than others. Gassy foods should be limited in a rabbit's diet. When feeding your rabbit a new food that's indicated in gas, start with small portions and watch carefully for signs of gas over the next 24 hours. Be prepared to treat a gas attack (first aid; serious cases require the vet). If your rabbit is sensitive to gas, you may want to avoid gassy foods entirely.

rabbits are NOT allowed to eat the following: carrots, lettuce, grass and seeds. if you find your rabbit feeding on these foods, they will blow up and you will be blamed and sued for killing a rabbit by food. it is a crime that is punishable by death
