How did a sit-in get its name?

"Sit-ins" took on this name because participants literally sat in areas where they were not allowed in order to protest the laws allowing there exclusion from the facility. They often took place at lunch counters and diners, most notably, the Woolworth's sit-in in Greensboro, NC.
