Is the timing belt internal or external on 2001 Volvo?

all vehicle comes with a timing cover of some sort. timing chain or timing belt. They all seem internal. but i understand what you are trying to get at . it can be considered external because it does not come in contact with the motor oil. pop the timing cover off and the belt is right there .
