Why do hoverflies have yellow stripes?

In nature, bright colouring, particularly black and yellow stripes, are a warning that the wearer of those colours is poisonous, or dangerous in some other way, so birds and other predators tend to avoid them. Some insects, for example the hoverfly, copy the colouring for self-protection, but are quite harmless.
