How do you become a franchisee?

Becoming a franchisee - this is a multi-faceted question. The first advice I can provide is consulting with experienced franchise professionals. Depending on where you are located (US or elsewhere), I would suggest starting with a franchise consultant/broker who can provide match-making services that will help match you with appropriate franchises based on your experience, your desires for types of businesses, your financial situation, etc. One of the points you should consider is whether you want a home-based franchise or store based franchise. Once you have narrowed down your search, you should do a lot of "due diligence' or investigation into the franchise. Speak to as many franchisees in the system as you can (at least 10% of a large system) finding out what they liked and disliked about the support and training they received. Also speak to franchisees who have left the system and ask the same questions. I would also suggest that you carefully read the 23 items of the FDD (the disclosure document you will receive from the franchisor). Once you have done that, retain an experienced franchise attorney like my firm, to evaluate the legal documents that you will be required to sign.
