The Word Jeep sprung up and the origin is disputed.
Option 1. JEEP was taken from the army term G.P. (General Purpose) When G-P is pronounced quickly it sounds like one is saying JEEP. Willis (the maker of the vehicle) took the name and made it a brand.
Option 2. A cartoon character in Popeye the Sailor called Eugene the Jeep is a magical dog-like character that disappears and appears everywhere at any time. This character predates the Jeep vehicle by many years. When the GP army vehicle now known as a Jeep went into use, the story goes, they just seemed to pop up out of nowhere like Eugene the Jeep. And the Jeep name stuck.
BTW Eugene is the #1 choice for personalized plates on a Jeep vehicle.
