Telescopes enlarge what you are looking at- makes it appear closer. A rifle scope has an internal arrangement of fine wires that produces a cross when looking through the scope. Turning adjustment screws move the wires up and down, or side to side, so that the center of the cross is looking at the point that the bullet hits.
