Prehistoric times refers to any time before written records. The first written records are from approximately 5,500 years ago. By then, people in some parts of the world had been farming for nearly 5,000 years. However, in other parts of the world, they lived a hunter-gatherer lifestyle.
Before agriculture began about 10,000 years ago, all prehistoric people relied on hunting and gathering. When megafauna roamed the land, bison, horses, camels, and even mammoths were hunted for food and for their hide, which could be used for clothing and shelter.
Before our species, Homo sapiens, even evolved about 200,000 years ago, homonids were using fire for warmth and protection, and making stone tools for cutting and
hunting.
