Where and when did tattooing start?

Oooooooh Kay!! I think we got into this one once before but let's run it down again......Most folks assume that tattooing got it's start in the south sea Islands in the pacific....When Capt. Cook's men saw tattooing on some of the island natives it was their first experience....The even took the natives Word TATAU, which literally means 'to tap repeatedly' as the Word to describe any human made bodily markings set permanently into the skin.

Well, since then we know thru archeologists work and the discovery of the 5000 + yr. old Ice Man's frozen body, found between the Italian and Swiss alps that the first known tattooing was in mid-Europe.

We have deduced that the original markings were to show the position and rank in the tribe, say a hunter would have certain markings, a warrior may have been different markings, and yet even different for the sons and daughters of the Chief, like 'royalty' so to speak....During the summer time someone could see a person in the distance and not be able to make out their facial features, but they could see the markings on their clothes in the winter, and on their bodies in the summer....No bans on nudity back then...

Now this is my take on the very first Tattooist!!!

Og and Bog were cave men, and Og ran a cave of ill repute, prostitution being the worlds oldest occupation, and one day Bog said he wanted a go at one of the girls, but he was a little short on the clamshells that they used for money. Bog said O.K. but don't take too long.

After a bit Og noticed Bog hadnt come back outta the cave and went in to see what was up....Bog was still very engaged with the young lady and wouldn't get up when Og told him to....Not to be outdone Og grabbed a fireband from a close by fire and jukked Bog in the butt!! At which point Bog got off the gal quick.....

A few days later Og noticed Bog down by the swimming hole and the mark was still there!!! After thinking about it for a bit, Og decided to to set up a new business not only becoming the first tattooist but also the first entreprenuer to deversify..........TatuBaron
