No,you have to pay for almost all the books you can only download a couple.

This is not true. I have more then 160 books on my Kindle and haven't paid anything for more then a dozen of them. Only a couple have I paid $7-$9 for, a number for 99 cents but the majority were free.

I keep my eye open on Amazon for books being offered for free for a short time. Later on if I look at them their price is considerably more. Just short time offerings to get interest going in an author or book.

PLUS Amazon, for one site, has many free older books. You can 'search' for "Kindle freebies" and find many books. PLUS, as I've noted in another post, the "Library of Congress" has many books that can be downloaded in several formats as well as downloading to Kindle. I've gotten several books from there, too.

There's a number of sites with free or low cost e-books.

I've had a Kindle for a year now and still think it's the most fantastic thing I own. I have a Kindle2 hubby bought me for Christmas last year and I bought a K3 when they came out just because the price had dropped so much and I liked being able to download 3500 books rather then "ONLY" 1500 (hahahaha). I 'loaned' my K2 to hubby and he's reading more then ever. We even turn off TV now to enjoy an evening of reading!

Don't know which e-reader is "best" because Kindle is all I've seen but I sure do love it!
