The sunflower (Helianthus annuus) is an annual native to the Southeastern U.S. Many of the native tribes used the sunflower as their solar deity symbol. They also traded with each other, and the sunflower seed made its way to the interior of Mexico. When the Spanish explorers arrived in 1510, they took seeds back to Europe. So, yes, sunflower seeds literally got "shipped" in sailing vessels to Europe.
