Dr benson, a young country doctor recieves a call at 2.00 am in the morning to deliver a baby. His mind complained at the horrible hour and he wondered why babies had to born at such improper times. He took two small hand bags, the short pill bag as the people of town knew it and the long obsterical case, the baby bag they called it. Mrs Ott Sorley, who the doctor was visiting already had a dozen children he thinks that she had never had a child in good weather or in daylight.
It was a long trip to the sorley farm. As he drove he came across a thin man with small black eyes filled with tears fron the wind. Since Benson was bored, when he saw the man he was relieved. He offered to give the man a ride. The man was going all the way to detroit. Both of them chatted and from their conversation we get to know that the man was somewhat of a mechanic and that he drove an ambulance section right up the front for four years in the army during the war. After the war he had been driving a truck but lost his job a month ago. The man's name was Evan.
They rode along silently as the rider placed his package down on the floor. As the man leaned over, doctor benson had a goodlook at his cat like face they bright and red scar on the mans cheek as though it were of recent orgin. Dr benson thought of the woman and searched for his watch which was when he found that his watch was missing. He takes the pistol from leather hostler from below the seat and threatened the man to give his watch back. The man gives him a watch and benson makes the man get down .
