This comes from an old poem by Oscar Wilde.

:-) good poem and good question.

Everything I can find says this is from an old poem: Love will die if held too tightly.

Love will fly if held too lightly.

Lightly, tightly, how do I know

Whether I'm holding, or letting love go?

-- Anonymous I know that the first two lines are in the short story "Marionettes Inc" by Ray Bradbury. That's where I first heard it.
